The Bible says, “Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.” (Daniel 6:10-11)
BRING IT DOWN ON HOME:
Most of you know the story about Daniel – one of the Hebrew captives who became a great, great man in Babylon. In fact, Daniel’s name means “God is judge” and the Lord GOD wisely used Daniel (during his captivity) to guide many heathen kings (Nebuchadnezzar, Nabonidus, Belshazzar, Cyrus, Cambyses, and Darius I). Fully equipped with wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and as an interpreter of dreams, Daniel could do everything except father children because he was a eunuch. Nonetheless, this did not hinder Daniel’s worship with the ALMIGHTY!
Unlike Daniel, many of us have problems making time to serve the Lord. We let our jobs, spouses, children, illnesses, let downs, depression, and many things get in the way. If we don’t have money, we get mad. If our sex lives are messed up, we can’t pray. If we get fat and over weight (because we refuse to control our appetites), we get mad at the Lord GOD. Honey! The Lord did not make us eat four pork chops, swallow down a half rack of BBQ ribs, gobble-up the potatoe salad, and consume half of the peach cobbler pie!
Although Daniel (along with others) was kidnapped and taken from his princely home, he still prayed! After Daniel no longer had parents, siblings, and personal servants, he still prayed! Even during the long journey (by foot) from Jerusalem to Babylon, Daniel still prayed! After the Babylonians castrated him, Daniel still prayed! Personally (and maybe like you), I would have misbehaved and thrown myself down in the mud!
By now, you may be asking who were “these men” who assembled themselves against Daniel? At this time, Daniel was the first of three presidents (appointed by king Darius) over Babylon and “these men” included two other presidents, one hundred and twenty princes, governors, counsellors, and captains formed a coalition against one man – Daniel! Oh my goodness! Does this sound familiar?
Whenever the LORD uses one person (or several) in a mighty way, jealous individuals come together to find faults and issues with him or her or them. Perhaps, folks don’t like a person’s looks, skills, abilities (to interpret the Scriptures or preach or sing or play an instrument) or whatever blessings and multiple talents are bestowed upon that individual or persons. These jealous people get behind the scenes via telephone, emails, letters, and secret meetings to belittle their brother or sister in Christ! Yet, they don’t really know that they are grieving THE HOLY SPIRIT!
(1) THE DECREE: “These men” wrote a degree, “…that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be case into the den of lions. Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing that it be not changed, according to the “law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not. Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.” (Daniel 6:7-8) “No Matter What , DANIEL KEPT ON PRAYING!
(2) THE PROSECUTION: Naturally, Daniel was charged, tried, found guilty, prosecuted, and put in the lions’ den. Why? As stated earlier, Daniel was a good and honest man in whom the Spirit of the Lord dwelt. Moreover, people were extremely envious of Daniel’s gifts and callings. Can you imagine how Daniel felt during this ordeal? In light of the irreversible decree, there was no other hope or help for Daniel – except to trust in the Lord GOD! As Daniel looked around the courtroom was filled with on-lookers, haters, and folks shaking their heads as they hissed at him! Some of us would have been hollering, screaming, crying, and rolling across the floor; but “No Matter What, DANIEL KEPT ON PRAYING!
(3) THE DELIVERANCE: Just before Daniel was cast into the lions’ den, the king made a prophetic statement to him, “Thy GOD whom thou servest continually, He will deliver thee.” (Daniel 6:16) As you’ve guessed, the Lord GOD shut the mouths of the lions. The next morning, the king (after fasting all night) made haste unto the den of lions and cried with “… a lamentable voice…” unto Daniel, “O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? Then Daniel said, O king live fore ever. My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.” (Daniel 6:20-22) “No Matter What, DANIEL KEPT ON PRAYING!
(4) GOD’S VENGEANCE: You see (although God’s vengeance is delayed), it is forthcoming! During Daniel’s trial and conviction, his accursers were celebrating. Certainly, they all attended a feast, got drunk, and plotted who would take Daniel’s position. Unfortunately, things did not turn out as “these men” expected, “And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den.” (Daniel 6:24) “No Matter What , DANIEL KEPT ON PRAYING!
What can we learn from Daniel?
“No Matter What – HOLD ON AND KEEP PRAYING!”
